A five year old company, earlier named Aliph now Jawbone, best known for its Bluetooth headsets, has launched a wristband and accompanying app that tracks the wearer’s total health.
The system, called UP, monitors the wearer’s sleep, diet and exercise habits, and in case finds something actionable or informable, even nudges him/her to do something about it.
Technology in the Jawbone UP system:
The Jawbone UP system technology has as its centre piece, something Jawbone calls its "MotionX" engine inside the wristband. The wristband, which resembles a meaty version of those yellow Livestrong bracelets, keeps track of all the wearer’s activity and sleeping patterns, courtesy the motion-tracking engine and other sensors.
Another component of the system, the app then asks for photos of the wearer’s meals and queries the wearer a few questions about how certain foods make him/her feel. The System keeps collecting as much data as unintrusively as possible all the time; and presents the reports giving a complete, holistic view of the wearer’s health. The reports can be accessed any time.
That apart, the Jawbone UP system not only tracks personal health of the wearer, but also offers actionable suggestions from time to time to the wearer, to improve the current status of his/her health.
Incorporating the social aspect to the health, the UP system offers an integrated sharing of wearer progress with friends. A special vibration on the wristband, will physically nudge the wearer, if he/she fails to act on improving the health or stay behind on the targets suggested for wearer’s health.
Price and Availability: The Jawbone UP health monitoring, will be available to consumers from Nov. 6 for $99. The company claims that the band is sweat-proof and water resistant, and its battery can last 10 days on a single charge. A hidden 3.5mm plug syncs the wristband with the iOS app, which is available for free in the App Store. The band comes in different colors and sizes.
