Yahoo Acquires Summly “pocket sized news for iPhone” Technology

I've always found iOS devices good for consuming content. Hence when I got to know about Yahoo's acquisition of mobile product company Summly, which has an app billed as “pocket sized news for iPhone”, it appeared a good acquisition.

Under the deal terms, Summly Founder Nick D’Aloisio and his team will join Yahoo in coming weeks, and the Summly app will be shut down. That's Yahoo is acquiring the technology, and will develop a similar product or some other product for its own mobile offerings.

Summly Founder Nick D’Aloisio created the App when just 15 Years Old:

At the age of 15, Nick D’Aloisio created the Summly app at his home in London. This is just November 2011. The idea behind the app was — with increasing content consumption on mobile devices  how to simplify discovery of news and information that are important to us, at a glance. And articles and web pages formatted for browsing with mouse clicks, definitely not suit mobiles.

Summly offers a solution to this problem by delivering snapshots of stories, giving a reader a simple and elegant way to find the news you want, faster than ever before. Summly offers simple browsing and condensed summaries from news outlets to get the point across, and quickly allows you to digest what’s happening in the world. Summly users read over 90 million summaries in just a few short months, since the app is launched.

The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter. Terms of the deal are not being disclosed. ---------

How Apple, Amazon security flaws, hacked within minutes 'entire digital life' of Mat Honan!

Mat Honan, A leading technology journalist, who writes for Wired, had his 'entire digital life' hacked in less than an hour -- courtesy "Flaws in Apple and Amazon security".

How such Quick Hacking materialized:

As Apple only requires basic security questions in order to access your Apple ID. From there the hackers were able to delete Mat's Google and Gmail account, stop his iPhone from working and take control of his Twitter page, reports The Daily Mail.

In an article on Wired.com, Honan shared with the world how the hacker, with who he actually spoke to, carried out the attack. After, revealing his modus operandi, the hacker also guided Mat to carry out his very own mock hack. According to Mat, all one needs to get into your iCloud account, is a billing address and the last four digits of a credit card number. Once rendered, Apple will issue a temporary password, and that password grants access to iCloud. The hacker managed to get Mat's credit card number by taking advantage of another security breach on Amazon.

How the Hacker took advantage of Amazon security breach:

He called Amazon and tell them he is the account holder, and want to add a credit card number to the account. All he required was the name on the account, an associated e-mail address, and the billing address.

After that, he called Amazon once again, and tell Amazon that he has lost access to his account. Upon providing a name, billing address, and the new credit card number, which he already had, Amazon allowed him to add a new e-mail address to the account.

Google to have Apple Game Center like Native App for Android
Who says Big companies don’t learn for each other!

According to BI, Google has pinpointed two things which till now prevented Google from earning well from the fat growing mobile games market. The two things, which the search giant learned from none other than rival Apple, are : 1) A native Android app similar to Game Center, an app on the iPhone that connects players in most of Apple's iOS games; and 2) Making the payments system for Google Play, the online store where players buy Android games and other apps, as smooth as buying games in the App Store.

This Google thinks are vital to make Google a contender in the fast-growing mobile games market.

What will ‘native Android app similar to Game Center’ offer?

A social "achievement" system, which will offer gamers awards and trophies for achievements in Games. In addition, there will be a leaderboard which will rank players against their friends. From where Google will get all these friends? Google+ .

Although Developers creating Android games are already using a variety of third-party solutions right now, like OpenFeint, to make for the deficiency; Google is hopeful that with a native game center and effective tweaks to the payments system for Google Play, Android developers will be happy. ---------

iPhone catching up RIM as smartphone of choice among consumers
By A Bisht

According to a recent survey by ChangeWave Research, Research In Motion continues to be the smartphone of choice among consumers, but Apple's iPhone is quickly catching up.

A week long survey conducted in September, revealed the following insights:

--RIM retains its lead in smartphone ownership with 40 percent market share. But there’s a dip f one percentage point compared to June 2009. And this is the lowest market share for Rim in two years.

-- RIM is facing Stiff competition from Apple, whose iPhone has 30 percent market share now. Compared to June, there’s an increase of 5 percentage points (new iPhone 3GS was released in June 2009)

--Palm remained steady, retaining its 7 percent market share since June. It’s to note that the two important launches, Palm Pre and Pixi, have not positively affected the Palm market share.

--Back in June 2006, Palm had a market share of 36 percent; it had eroded steadily from that peak to 7 percent now. ---------

First Jailbreaking App For iPhone 3G S Released
By Mani Raj

The first jailbreak application for Apple's new iPhone 3GS is available now. Its released just two weeks after the iPhone's debut.

A 19-year-old Google employee, George Hotz who is originally from New Jersey has created the application.

Jailbreaking the iPhone 3GS will allow a user to install any programs directly onto the iPhone. This includes applications that are not sold by Apple via the App Store.

George Hotz has provided a step-by-step explanation on how to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS, in his blog.

In his blog, George warns users to be prepared by getting Windows (but not Windows 7) installed on a PC, the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. He also warns potential jailbreakers to first back up all their files and programs.

There have been mixed reactions to his blog post about jailbreaking. Some people were concerned about their jailbreaking attempts, while others praised him and his development team for their hard work.

A few iPhone 3GS owners were stuck with a frozen iPhone after installing WinterBoard - an open-source application that allows users to apply themes to their iPhone.

Loyal iPhone Users Outraged At AT&T
By Mani Raj

AT&T's pricing policy for the new iPhone 3G S has outraged even the most loyal iPhone users.

AT&T is charging a $200 fee to the existing iPhone 3G users who want to upgrade to the latest 3G S model.

The angry iPhone users are using Twitter as a medium to file their complaints and express their anger, against AT&T.

As of Wednesday afternoon, nearly 5,000 people have signed the "twitition" which says, "AT&T should give existing customers the same rate for the new iPhone 3G S that they do for new customers. New customers or not, another two-year contract is being made."

All the customers who purchased an older iPhone with the current AT&T contract are not eligible for another subsidized phone. Those subscribers would be forced to pay the full price for the iPhone 3G S, $399 for the 16GB and $599 for the 32GB model.

Besides the Twitter petition, consumers are also complaining on several other forums, including AT&T's own Apple forum. The complaints are now moving beyond the pricing to include AT&T's network issues.

So far AT&T has not officially responded to the consumer reaction to its iPhone upgrade fee.

Palm Pre Upstages The iPhone
By Mani Raj

Palm Inc., has released a new mobile phone operating system which is more powerful, elegant and user-friendly.

The Palm Pre goes on sale Saturday for $200 (after mail-in rebate) at Sprint stores. It makes it easier to do more things on the go.

With webOS - Palm's new operating system, users now can keep multiple applications running at once. The operating system organizes the open applications like a row of cards which stretch off the screen. The users can flick the screen to switch between applications.

For example, if you need to quickly check your calendar while writing an e-mail, you can bring up the calendar application, then flick back to e-mail.

But on the iPhone, users can run only one application at a time. Also, unlike the iPhone, webOS notifies users of events that need their attention, no matter which application they are using. The notification icons for e-mails and calls appear at the bottom of the screen.

Apple is expected to fire back soon by announcing an upgraded iPhone model. It won't be able to do everything the Palm Pre can do, but it might have other novel features.
